The Truth About Partial Dentures

If you’re missing a few teeth, partial dentures can be a practical, natural-looking way to restore your smile, chewing, and speech. At Smile Again Dentures, we’ve helped patients throughout Lewiston, Auburn, and Brunswick, ME feel confident again with partial dentures that are made for comfort, function, and appearance.

Unfortunately, a lot of misinformation keeps people from exploring this option. Let’s clear up the most common partial dentures myths—and share what actually matters when you’re deciding what’s right for you.

Myth #1: “Partial dentures are only for older people.”

Tooth loss can happen at any age due to injury, decay, gum disease, or medical issues. Partial dentures are simply a solution for replacing one or several missing teeth—regardless of age—so you can eat, speak, and smile more comfortably.

Myth #2: “Partial dentures always look fake.”

Modern partial dentures are designed to look like natural teeth and blend with your smile. The key is customization—shade matching, tooth shape, and a fit that supports a natural appearance when you talk and smile.

At Smile Again Dentures, we focus on creating partial dentures that look as good as they function, within the limits of the industry, so you can feel confident wearing them.

Myth #3: “Partial dentures will be painful forever.”

It’s normal to have an adjustment period. Your mouth needs time to adapt, and minor sore spots can happen early on. But ongoing pain is not something you should “just live with.”

That’s where partial denture adjustments matter. A small adjustment can make a big difference in comfort and wearability, especially in the first few weeks

Myth #4: “Partial dentures will ruin my remaining teeth.”

A properly designed and properly fitted partial denture should work with your remaining teeth—not against them. Problems are more likely when a partial denture is loose, worn, or hasn’t been adjusted as your mouth changes.

What helps protect your natural teeth:

           ● A stable fit

           ● Regular check-ins/adjustments when needed

           ● Good daily cleaning (both your partial denture and your natural teeth)

Myth #5: “You can’t eat normally with partial dentures.”

Partial dentures are made to restore chewing function, but you may need a short transition period. Many patients do best by starting with softer foods, taking smaller bites, and chewing evenly on both sides.

If your partial denture shifts or feels unstable while eating, that’s a sign you may need an adjustment—not that partial dentures “don’t work.”

Myth #6: “Partial dentures are all the same.”

Myth #7: “Once you get partial dentures, you’re done forever.”

Your mouth changes over time. Gums and bone can shift, and your partial denture may eventually need a reline, repair, or replacement to maintain comfort and function. That’s why it’s important to choose a removable-focused team that can support you long-term with services like denture and partial repairs, relines, and adjustments

What You Should Really Know Before Getting Partial Dentures

If you’re considering partial dentures, there are some practical truths to focus on before you visit a denturist. Knowing what to expect and how to properly care for your removable will help you achieve the results you’re looking for. The first thing to remember is that the right fit is everything. Comfort and stability depend heavily on how well your partial denture is made and adjusted. It’s also important to keep in mind that adjustments are normal, especially early on. Small tweaks can prevent bigger issues with your dentures down the road.

Remember to keep in mind that daily care matters. Clean your partial denture as directed and keep it moist when it’s out to help maintain its shape. A good dental provider can help you decide between acrylic partials or metal partials. Each option has its own pros and cons. They will help you make the right choice for your teeth.

Getting new dentures is a significant step toward regaining a confident smile and the ability to enjoy your favorite foods. However, your journey doesn’t end the moment you receive your new prosthetic. Over time, your mouth naturally changes, and your dentures may need fine-tuning to maintain a perfect fit. Regular denture adjustments are essential not just for comfort but for your overall oral health and the appearance of your smile.

           Why Are Denture Adjustments Necessary?

Dentures are custom-made to fit the unique contours of your gums and jaw. When they are first fitted, they should feel secure and comfortable. However, the human body is always changing, and your mouth is no exception. Natural changes can be expected in your jaw and gums.

After teeth are extracted, the underlying jawbone begins a natural process of resorption, or shrinking, because it no longer has tooth roots to stimulate it. This process is most rapid in the first few months after extraction but continues slowly throughout your life. As the bone and gum tissues change shape, the once-perfect fit of your dentures can become loose.

A loose denture can lead to several problems, including discomfort, difficulty chewing, speech issues, and an increased risk of breakage. Regular dental adjustments ensure your dentures continue to conform to the changing shape of your mouth, preventing these issues before they start.

           Benefits of Regular Denture Adjustments

Keeping up with routine adjustments offers significant advantages that enhance your quality of life. The benefits go far beyond simply alleviating a sore spot. The most immediate benefit of a denture adjustment is relief from pain and irritation. A well-fitted denture rests comfortably on your gum tissues without rubbing or pinching. This not only feels better but also protects the health of your gums. Chronic irritation from an ill-fitting denture can lead to inflammation and, in severe cases, oral lesions. By ensuring your dentures fit correctly, you are actively preserving the health of your mouth.

Regular denture adjustments can also give you a confident and more natural-looking smile. Aesthetics are a major reason people get dentures, and a proper fit is key to a beautiful smile. When dentures are loose, they can sag or shift, making your smile look unnatural. A secure fit ensures your dentures stay in place, supporting your facial muscles and giving your cheeks and lips a fuller, more youthful appearance. This stability allows you to smile, laugh, and speak with complete confidence, knowing your teeth look great and won't move unexpectedly.

Finally, regular denture adjustments can improve your ability to eat and speak without issue. A professional adjustment restores the stability you need to chew a wider variety of foods efficiently and comfortably. Similarly, clear speech depends on your tongue and lips working against a stable set of teeth. Secure dentures eliminate the slipping that can cause mumbling or clicking, allowing you to communicate clearly and confidently.

Wearing dentures for the first time can be a big change. While they restore your smile and ability to chew, they also require proper care to ensure they remain comfortable and functional for years to come. Dentures were not designed to feel exactly like your natural teeth, they are a prosthetic and though you may eventually feel like they aren’t even there, they do take some getting used to. As a prosthetic there will need to be both adjustments right after inserting them as well as more routine adjustments and care. We will walk you through some of the essentials of false teeth care, with a special focus on the importance of professional denture adjustments.

           Why Are Denture Adjustments Necessary?

After you receive a new set of dentures, your gums and jawbone will have some changes. This is a natural process as your mouth gets used to the presence of a prosthetic but in addition, our bodies, including our mouths continually change as we age., This can cause your once-perfectly fitting dentures to become loose or uncomfortable. Ill-fitting dentures can lead to several problems, including sore spots on your gums, difficulty speaking, and trouble eating. Denture adjustments and relines are the solution to these issues. A denturist can precisely refit your appliance to match the current shape of your mouth, restoring comfort and function. It is important not to attempt these adjustments yourself, as you could permanently damage your dentures or harm your mouth. Relining of dentures is common every 2-5 years depending on the amount of time the dentures are worn.

Proper daily maintenance is important for the longevity of your false teeth. You should clean your dentures every day to remove food particles and prevent plaque buildup, just as you would with natural teeth. Use a soft-bristled brush and a non-abrasive denture cleanser either specifically designed for dentures or a mild regular toothpaste, non-whitening. Dentures are not designed to handle being dropped, whether onto a counter, into a sink or onto the floor. It is best to handle your dentures with care either over a folded towel or a basin full of water to prevent breakage if they are dropped. They should never be wrapped in a napkin or placed in your pocket. When you are not wearing them, keep your dentures moist to prevent them from warping. This can be done by either soaking in water or a denture cleanser in a denture case. Proper care will help maintain their fit and appearance.

When to Seek Professional Denture Adjustments

If you experience any discomfort, sore spots, or notice your dentures slipping, it is time to schedule a visit with your denture provider. These are clear signs that denture adjustments are needed. Adjustments are the removal of high areas in the denture that are pressing into your gums and causing soreness and pain but can be completed in one visit. If the dentures are becoming loose it may be time for a reline. Relining dentures requires an impression and new acrylic being added to the inside of your denture and is a process that takes at least a day and requires 2 visits. Addressing minor fit problems early on can prevent more significant discomfort and potential damage to your gums and jaw. It is ultimately the responsibility of the denture wearer to contact a dental provider if they feel there is an issue with their dentures. Most offices are more than happy to answer any and all questions though a visit in person may be necessary to check fit and function, a phone conversation can only share so much.

Dentures are a key solution for restoring smiles and boosting confidence, but like all medical prosthetics, they don’t last forever. Over time, even the best-quality dentures may need to be replaced due to wear and tear, changes in your mouth, or damage. Knowing the signs that you might need replacement dentures can save you from discomfort and keep your smile looking and feeling its best.

           When to Consider Replacement Dentures

Recognizing the need for replacement dentures isn’t always simple or straightforward, but here are some common signs to watch for. If you start noticing the following problems, it might be time to consult with your denture provider to determine a path forward.

           Fit Issues or Discomfort

Over time, the shape of your gums and mouth can change due to natural aging, weight fluctuations, or bone loss. These changes can cause your dentures to feel loose or uncomfortable. You might notice that it becomes difficult to chew, speak, or keep your dentures in place. If this happens, reach out to your denture provider to determine the source of the issue.

           Visible Wear and Tear

You use your dentures every day, which can lead to natural wear and tear over time. Signs of burgeoning issues include cracks, chips, or discoloration. If your dentures look worn out, it’s a clear sign that they might need to be replaced. Worn or damaged dentures can also become less functional, impacting how well you can eat or speak.

           Persistent Gum Irritation

Ill-fitting dentures can irritate your gums, causing sores, bleeding, or other symptoms of pain or discomfort. This is not just about your comfort; this issue can actually lead to infections if left unchecked. If you experience persistent irritation, consider seeking professional advice about replacement dentures.

           Bad Odor or Taste

Older or damaged dentures may harbor bacteria, leading to unpleasant odors or tastes. While regular cleaning can help mitigate this issue, persistent problems may indicate it’s time for an upgrade.

           Changes in Your Face Shape

Well-fitted dentures support the structure of your face. If your face is beginning to look sunken, or if your jawline appears different, it might be due to outdated dentures that no longer provide the proper support.

Tips for When You Need Denture Adjustment

If you’re a relatively new denture user, you may not be aware that they require regular maintenance. Like any dental appliance, however, they won’t function properly if they aren’t fitting well. The occasional denture adjustment will see to it that you continue to enjoy the optimal eating and speaking benefits that your dentures can provide.

So how exactly can you know when your dentures need to be adjusted? General loosening and displacement are often gradual, which means it can be difficult to notice until it’s progressed to a serious level. If you are experiencing pain or discomfort, however, that is a sure sign that it’s time for a professional denture adjustment. Your jawbone and gums will change over time, which is completely natural, but may lead to irritation, sore spots, or even sharp pain in the gums. Other signs to watch out for include difficulty with eating or speaking. If your bite seems to have shifted or you find yourself slurring your words, it’s likely that your dentures are slipping because they have worn down over time.

If you’re wondering what you should expect out of a denture adjustment appointment, we’ve got tips to help with that as well! The process is actually quite straightforward and begins with an assessment of the current fit of your dentures. In some cases, the underside of the denture may be reshaped, while others require a relining of new base material. The better you keep up with routine check-ups, the less adjustment your dentures will need. It’s recommended to schedule a visit every 6 months.

When it comes to exploring the world of false teeth, there are several reasons as to why people choose to have the service completed. Some may have certain medical conditions where their adult teeth have not fully grown, others may have been involved in an accident that has knocked out their adult teeth, or some may have begun to have teeth fall out due to advancing age. Regardless of your situation, finding a provider who has experience working with many cases involving false teeth can help you feel confident moving forward with a procedure.

When you choose to work with our team at Smile Again Dentures, you will be pleased to know that we have perfected each step of the process, from the first consultation through making the appliance and the adjustment appointments to check in on the prosthetics you have had placed into your mouth. Our providers make it their top priority to make sure each patient is fully educated on the entire procedure, any possible risks that accompany a dental prosthetic procedure, and the proper care for both your mouth and new appliances after they are placed. By making the entire education process as thorough as possible, we have noticed that each of our patients has a more complete understanding of how a dental prosthetic will affect their day-to-day life and what they can expect with their new false teeth.

Dentures Care 101

Our team at Smile Again Dentures wants to help you be proud of your smile. Keep reading for some tips to help you properly care for your false teeth.

Denture care is something anyone looking to get dentures should be aware of. Caring for your false teeth is similar to how you care for real teeth and it is important that you clean them often. Here are some tips about how to properly care for your false teeth

            Rinse dentures after eating -

Full and partial dentures require care, including rinsing your false teeth after you eat whenever possible. It is hard to get every nook and cranny of your false teeth rinsed with them in your mouth, so the best way to rinse them is to take them out of your mouth, rinse them under running water, swish water through your mouth, and replace them.

            Handle with care -

Dentures are fragile and should be handled with care so that they do not break. No one wants to have to pay for a second set of dentures because they were broken while being cleaned. Filling the sink with water or a fluffy towel to “catch” the denture if you accidentally drop it can help avoid a break. You should stay aware of how you are holding the denture as well, especially lower full dentures. It is possible to squeeze the ends of a lower denture together and cause a fracture in the front.

            Soaking & Cleaning

           overnight

            -

False teeth need to stay moist when not being worn. This helps mainly to stop the material from getting brittle but can also help to maintain their shape. Soaking is also the best way to be sure they are free from bacteria. Brushing with a soft toothbrush and regular toothpaste twice a day (morning and night) is great and should be done daily, but soaking penetrates into the porous surface and prevents the growth of bacteria that can cause yellowing. It is possible to wear your dentures through the night, but this could add wear to your dentures as many people grind without realizing it. Soaking overnight in regular water or denture cleaning tablets works best. Partials fit around remaining natural teeth and if you leave the partial out too long, you may affect the fit of the partial. Your natural teeth are mobile and your mouth will shift your teeth over time to spread into those open spaces. Leaving a partial out overnight is fine, leaving it out for days, weeks, or months means that you may not be able to get them back in.

            Schedule regular checkups -

Every year or every other year checkups and cleanings for your dentures can help them to last longer and can maintain fit. The inside of your mouth, like the rest of your body, continues to change as you age. Dentures can be refitted to those changes with relining. You may go years without needing anything more than a tartar removal and polish, or you may lose weight and need to have relines done. Checking in and asking questions never hurts.

The Benefits of Partial Dentures

Learn more about the benefits of partial dentures and denture dental services with Smile Again Dentures! We serve Lewiston, Auburn, and Brunswick, ME.

Partial dentures are meant to fill in the gaps for anyone who has permanently lost a few teeth. Here are a few benefits of partial dentures:

           More efficient chewing -

Missing teeth make chewing harder because there are not as many teeth to break down food. Partial dentures can fill in those gaps and make chewing food a more pleasant experience.

            Improve jaw structure -

If you have missing teeth and don’t get partial dentures or have surgery to put in dental implants, your jawbone will get weak in the spots of missing teeth. Over time, this will result in your jawbone shrinking in those areas.

           Partial Dentures Vs Dental Bridges

Dental bridges and partial dentures are often confused with one another. They are both used to fill in a gap where your natural teeth would be. The choice of which to use in your case will depend on your personal preferences and the recommendation of your dentist. There are some differences between the two that you should know about prior to making the decision of which you may want.

Partial dentures are used to replace a few missing teeth. They go in and out of your mouth on a daily basis, unlike bridges that are cemented into place. Partials are secured to your natural teeth using either clasps or “interproximal retention” meaning they use the spaces between your teeth to stay in place. They are also different from bridges because partials most often have both artificial teeth as well as pick acrylic gums, while bridges are only artificial teeth.

While there is the option to have flexible acrylic partials, we do not make these in our office. Flexible partials can be damaging to your natural tissue and teeth causing more harm. If you happen to lose any additional natural teeth, they cannot be added to your existing flexible partial, a new one will need to be made at full expense. You also cannot repair a flexible partial as they will not bond with new acrylic - if a tooth breaks off or you break it in half you need a new one.

Dental bridges are quite similar to partial dentures. They serve the same purpose but do so in a different manner. Unlike dentures, bridges only consist of the tooth portion, and are made of fired porcelain as opposed to acrylic. There are no artificial gums with them. They are more permanent as they are cemented in place while dentures are removable. Bridges use crowns on either side of the replacement teeth to secure the unit in place.
