What’s Involved in the Denture Fitting Process

What Does the Denture Fitting Process Involve?

If you are considering dentures, you may wonder what to expect during the fitting process. Whether you need complete dentures, partial dentures, or replacements for older false teeth, understanding each step can help you feel more prepared and confident.

At Smile Again Dentures, we work with patients throughout Lewiston, ME; Auburn, ME; Brunswick, ME; and surrounding communities to create comfortable, natural-looking dentures designed around each person’s needs.

Your Initial Consultation

The process begins with a consultation. During this appointment, we discuss your oral health, concerns, lifestyle, and goals. We also evaluate your gums, remaining teeth, bite, and any existing dentures or partials.

This appointment is a good time to ask questions about denture options, expected timelines, care instructions, and payment arrangements. We use this information to help determine whether full dentures, acrylic partial dentures, metal partial dentures, or another option may be appropriate for you.

Taking Impressions

Accurate impressions are essential for creating dentures that fit properly. We carefully capture the shape of your gums, palate, and remaining teeth so your new prosthetic can be designed for comfort, stability, and function. A good foundation is essential for the best possible fit and function of your denture or partial.

Bite Registration and Tooth Selection

This part of the fitting process includes:

Recording your natural bite and jaw position

Selecting a tooth size, shape, and shade

Marking your smile line and midline

Discussing individual tweaks that make your new smile match your old smile

These steps help us create false teeth that look natural while supporting everyday activities such as speaking and eating. It also allows you to personalize your smile. If you have had a crooked tooth in your smile your entire life and want that to appear in your denture, we can usually make that happen.

Trying Your New Dentures

Before your final dentures are completed, you have the opportunity to try a preliminary version where the teeth are set in wax. This allows us to evaluate the appearance, bite, and overall look of your new appliance. You are encouraged to provide feedback about how the teeth look. The fit is not fully determined at this point as stone models have no flexibility and we need to be able to remove the wax setup from the model to place it in your mouth. A secondary impression may be taken at the end of the appointment to ensure the best final fit.

Small changes at this stage can make a meaningful difference in the final result. We want you to feel comfortable sharing your preferences so we can make adjustments when needed. It is easy to make changes at this stage, once they are approved and sent to finish there would be other incurred charges to make changes.

Your New Denture Inserted

Your final scheduled appointment is to receive your denture and confirm a comfortable fit. Your bite will be checked and any minor adjustments for soreness will be made. How to become comfortable wearing dentures, care of your dentures, and any questions you have will be discussed. Final payment will be received.

Making Denture Adjustments

It is normal for new dentures to require some denture adjustments. Your mouth needs time to adapt, and certain areas may feel more sensitive than others during the first several days or weeks.

You should never be in pain. Contact us if your dentures cause persistent discomfort, rub against your gums, or make it difficult to speak or chew. Denture adjustments are included in the cost of our dentures and partials and are needed to help you stay comfortable wearing your new smile. We try to schedule adjustments as soon as possible but an appointment is needed so be sure to call first.

Existing dentures may also need adjustments, repairs, or relines over time because your gums and jaw naturally change. Regular care can help extend the usefulness of your dentures and partials.
